Preserving Tradition, Inspiring Generations: Panchali Debbarma Nominated to NEZCC Board of Governors

In a significant recognition of lifelong dedication to the art and culture of Tripura, the Ministry of Culture, Government of India has officially nominated Smt. Panchali Debbarma to the prestigious Board of Governors of the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), Dimapur. Approved by the Union Culture Minister, her appointment as the representative of Tripura marks a landmark moment for the state’s vibrant artistic community.

As an accomplished folk and classical vocalist, choreographer, and cultural ambassador, Ms Debbarma brings an extraordinary legacy of promoting the rich indigenous heritage of Tripura on both national and international stages. Her artistic journey is backed by an exceptional foundation in both classical and traditional disciplines. She holds a Visharad in Vocal Music from the Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapith in Lucknow, as well as a Visharad in Rabindra Nritya from the Bangiya Sangeet Parishad.

Speaking to News Sense, Editor, Joydeep Dasgupta, Panchali said “I am overwhelmed by this appointment, as this appointment is a recognition to my efforts for the cultural integration of the country. I’ll give my best in promoting the art and culture of Tripura in national as well as international stage“.

Her profound expertise across diverse mediums earned her an Honorary Doctorate in Art & Culture in December 2020, conferred during the Atma Nirbhar Bharat National Conference in Indore on the recommendation of Brampton International University. This rigorous training has allowed her to specialize deeply in indigenous tribal dance forms such as Hojagiri, Mamita, Jhum, Lebang Bumani, and Goria, alongside a mastery of Bengali forms like Rabindra Nritya, Nazrul Nritya, Dhamail, and Jhumur.

Panchali’s career as a cultural representative spans nearly three decades, beginning prominently with her participation in the 1997 Republic Day Celebrations in New Delhi. Over the years, she has regularly performed under the Ministry of Culture across various zonal cultural centers, showcasing Tripura’s heritage at major national events including Bharat Parv, Paryatan Parv, Geeta Jayanti, the National Tribal Festival, Lok Utsav, Shilp Mahotsav, and the Magh Mela. Her role as a cultural ambassador has also transcended national borders, leading her to represent India in prestigious international cultural exchange programs hosted in Bangladesh.

Her leadership in the cultural sector has been particularly pronounced in recent years. She has actively served as a Team Leader for cultural contingents from Tripura at several premier national platforms throughout 2025 and early 2026. These high-profile assignments included leading state representations at the Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj, the Ranpur Mahotsav in Odisha, Octave 2025 in Nagpur, and the Madhavpur Ghed Fair in Gujarat. Furthermore, she led cultural showcases at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie in both July and September 2025, and most recently directed the cultural showcase for the State Foundation Day at Lok Bhavan in Chennai in January 2026.

Beyond her live performances, she has built a lasting recorded legacy and demonstrated a deep commitment to grassroots community service. She has recorded multiple modern Kokborok song albums to preserve and popularize indigenous contemporary music, alongside Bengali modern and devotional albums released by prominent labels across Kolkata and Mumbai, such as Prime Music, Beethoven Company, Worldwide Company, and Sagarika Music.

Grounding her success in social service, she frequently organizes and instructs free folk dance training workshops to pass traditional arts down to future generations. Her strategic appointment to the NEZCC Board of Governors ensures that Tripura’s unique traditions will continue to receive dedicated advocacy and structured institutional support at the highest level.
