Ajay ‘Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft’ Launched in Kolkata

In a major boost to India’s naval capabilities, the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd., a premier Defence Public Sector Undertaking, launched Ajay, the eighth and final Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) for the Indian Navy in a ceremonial event held in Kolkata.

The ship was launched by Smt. Priya Deshmukh, wife of Vice Admiral Kiran Deshmukh, AVSM, VSM, Chief of Materiel, Indian Navy, who attended the event as the Chief Guest. Also present were senior dignitaries, including GRSE’s Chairman and Managing Director, Commodore P. R. Hari (Retd), along with top officials from the Indian Navy and GRSE.

This launch holds historical significance, marking a symbolic return to GRSE’s roots. The original INS Ajay, commissioned in 1961, was the first indigenously built warship by GRSE. The new Ajay not only revives this legacy but also demonstrates India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

The ASW SWC class ships are specially designed for coastal operations, with a primary focus on submarine detection and neutralization in shallow waters. Each 77.6-metre-long vessel is equipped with advanced sonar systems, lightweight torpedoes, rockets, and remote-controlled weaponry. Additionally, these crafts are capable of laying mines and conducting Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO), making them versatile assets for near-shore defence.

The launch of Ajay marks the culmination of a strategic series. The first ship in the series, INS Arnala, was commissioned in June 2025, while the second, Androth, has successfully completed its sea trials.

With the completion of the ASW SWC series, GRSE continues to affirm its critical role in advancing India’s maritime defence capabilities, blending heritage with innovation to support the nation’s strategic interests.
