How India Transformed the Vulnerable ‘Chicken Neck’ into a Dominant ‘Elephant Trunk’
For decades, military strategists and geopolitical analysts have viewed the Siliguri Corridor, a narrow strip of land in North Bengal measuring just 17 to 22 kilometers at its narrowest point as India’s ultimate geographic vulnerability. Popularly dubbed the ‘Chicken’s Neck,’ this fragile land bridge serves as the sole terrestrial lifeline connecting mainland India to its eight northeastern states. In any major conflict scenario, the looming threat was that an adversarial thrust could choke this narrow passage, effectively isolating 40 million citizens and cutting off vital military logistics.
Speaking to News Sense, a Senior Army Officer Stationed at Indian Army’s Eastern Command, said, “However, a fundamental shift in the strategic posture has quietly rewritten the script. Through an aggressive buildup of forward infrastructure and permanent military placements, India is transforming this historical chokepoint. The fragile ‘Chicken’s Neck, has evolved into a muscular ‘Elephant Trunk’, a powerful, proactive instrument capable of forcefully sweeping aside any obstacle in its path”.
Fortifying the Frontier: The New Three-Garrison Shield
The transition from a defensive bottleneck to an offensive pivot is anchored by the reported establishment of three new Indian Army garrisons strategically positioned along the eastern frontier:
Lachit Borphukan Military Station (Bamuni near Dhubri, Assam): Serving as a major anchor point near the Brahmaputra basin, this base provides deep logistical depth.
Kishanganj Forward Base (Bihar): Positioned along the western flank of the corridor, this station secures vital transit routes running parallel to the border.
Chopra Forward Base (West Bengal): Sited less than a kilometer from the international boundary, this base gives India an immediate, eagle-eye vantage point over the narrowest sector of the corridor.
These installations, developed in tight coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF), bridge critical intelligence gaps and create overlapping zones of real-time surveillance and rapid troop mobilization.
Neutralizing Regional Instability: Hold Over the Bangladesh Frontier
The geopolitical landscape surrounding the corridor shifted dramatically following recent regime changes and political volatility in Bangladesh. Concerns regarding cross-border spillovers, demographic shifts, and unusual diplomatic alignments such as the recent docking of a Pakistan Navy ship at Chattogram port spurred India into taking absolute control of its border security.
With the new garrisons operational, the operational balance along the Indo-Bangladesh border has completely transformed. The Chopra installation, sitting directly on the border, removes any element of tactical surprise from cross-border actors. By converting a passive border watch into an active multi-layered defense network, India has demonstrated significant power asymmetry. For any leadership in Dhaka tilting toward New Delhi’s adversaries, the message is clear: the corridor is no longer an exposed target, but a fortified launch pad backed by overwhelming rapid-deployment capabilities.
Drawing the Line: The Check over China
While border management keeps the southern flank secure, the true target of India’s ‘Elephant Trunk’ strategy lies to the north: China’s aggressive stance in the Chumbi Valley. Strategically wedged between Bhutan and Sikkim, the Chumbi Valley is the staging ground from which the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has long threatened to sever the Siliguri Corridor.
India’s response is no longer restricted to waiting at the pass. The new garrisons act as the rear-guard foundation for a massive, high-tech arsenal already deployed by the Indian Army’s Tri-Shakti Corps. Guarding the northern approaches are state-of-the-art S-400 air defense systems, BrahMos supersonic cruise missile regiments, and a dedicated squadron of Rafale fighter jets stationed nearby at Hasimara Air Force Station.
By pairing these advanced offensive capabilities with the new rapid-mobilization bases, India can instantly counter any Chinese adventurism along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Rather than worrying about being cut off, India now holds the tactical flexibility to project power outward, securing the tri-junction areas and protecting the territorial integrity of partners like Bhutan.
From Vulnerability to Dominance
The narrative of the Siliguri Corridor is officially changing. It is time to retire the anxious rhetoric of the ‘Chicken’s Neck’. A chicken’s neck represents a point of easy strangulation, a geographic flaw to be exploited by aggressive neighbors.
What exists today is an Elephant Trunk, strong, heavily armored, deeply rooted in mainland logistics, and highly dexterous. With three new garrisons reinforcing its spine and advanced strategic assets ready at a moment’s notice, India’s eastern land bridge stands ready to dismantle any threat that dares to challenge it.

While strengthening the Silguri corridor is appreciated, Bangladesh and Pakistan need to be informed that Chittagong port can be very easily cut off by India, as we have salients jutting into Bangladesh near Feni. That in my mind will be a proactive step and send the right message across that in case of a joint action by China, Bangladesh and Pakistan of cutting off the NE by occupying the Silguri corridor will result in Bangladesh being completely choked off by cutting out Chittagong.
