GRSE Delivers Advanced Stealth Frigate ‘Himgiri’ to Boost Indian Navy’s Combat Strength
Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), the leading defence shipyard based in Kolkata, made history on July 31, 2025 by delivering ‘Himgiri’, an Advanced Guided-Missile Frigate, to the Indian Navy. This is the first of three ships being constructed by GRSE under Project 17A.
‘Himgiri’ is the 801st vessel built by GRSE, including 112 warships — the highest number delivered by any Indian shipyard so far. At 149 metres long and weighing 6,670 tonnes, it is among the most sophisticated frigates ever developed by GRSE. The ship is equipped with advanced weapons such as BrahMos cruise missiles and Barak 8 air defence missiles, significantly enhancing the Navy’s combat strength.
Built with high indigenous content, ‘Himgiri’ reflects India’s push for self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It has modern radar and combat systems, and is designed for anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine operations. The vessel can carry a crew of 225 personnel and supports helicopter operations from its deck.
The warship was formally handed over to the Indian Navy and accepted by Rear Admiral Ravnish Seth. GRSE is currently building 15 other warships of various types for the Navy, reinforcing its role as a key contributor to India’s maritime security.
