The annual ‘Ganga Sagar Mela’ conducted by the Govt of West Bengal (WB) is currently underway at Sagar Island from 10 to 16 Jan 21. Based on a request from the Govt of WB, the Indian Navy has deployed two teams of specialist divers at Kakdwip and Sagar Island with inflatable boats and diving equipment for providing Search and Rescue (SAR) cover to the public at the event.
The specialised Indian Navy diving teams will operate in the waters of the Hooghly and the Bay of Bengal, and patrol the entire stretch of waterfront being utilised by pilgrims for bathing in the river/sea. The teams are operating in close coordination with the WB State Administration and Marine/ Coastal Police, in service of the public visiting the Mela.
