Apeejay Bangla Sahitya Utsob, India’s first Bengali literary festival, will no longer be a Kolkata only literary event. Due to popular demand, ABSU will be held in multiple cities across India, including Kolkata, beginning next year.
Curated by the iconic Oxford Bookstore the eighth edition of this three-day festival saw some of the most prominent names in Bengali literature and culture present their perspectives on all aspects of “Bangaliaana” (Bengali culture) and literature.
This year was significant for ABSU in a number of ways. The eighth edition of this three-day literary festival returned to its on-site format at the landmark Oxford Bookstore at Park Street after two editions went online due to COVID. It was also streamed online for global fans of Bengali literature and culture.
The launch of Bengali Little Magazine Corner at the iconic Oxford Bookstore on Park Street was announced during the inauguration of the eighth edition of ABSU to commemorate the Oxford Bookstore’s centennial celebration. There are approximately 2000 little magazines published in Bengali throughout India. Oxford Bookstore’s online store is also considering selling these Bengali Little Magazines online in order to reach a wider audience. It will be a free platform with a modest revenue-sharing model.
The eighth edition of ABSU reached a wider section of the audience through interesting sessions and discussions over varied topics of interest, like poetry, little magazines, illustrations, use of dialects, politics, youth literature, thriller, book publishing and editing, journalism and cinema in Bangla literature. The festival hosted 72 finest literary and creative minds from Bengal with 27 specially curated sessions.
ABSU has grown over the last seven years and is now celebrated and eagerly awaited among fans of Bengali literature and culture both in India and abroad. Keeping its global popularity in mind, ABSU 2022 was streamed LIVE on the official Apeejay Bangla Sahitya Utsob Facebook Page and YouTube channel on all three days – November 25, 26, and 27. This ensured that Bengali literary enthusiasts from all over the world could immerse themselves in this literary and cultural extravaganza transcending time and geography.
The eighth edition of ABSU hosted eminent personalities like Pabitra Sarkar, Himadri kishore Dasgupta, Ashoke Viswanathan, Anik Dutta, Samik Bandyopadhyay, Abul Bashar, Rupam Islam, Sujog Bandyopadhyay, Binod Ghosal, Kheyali Dastidar, Rahul Banerjee Arunoday, Biswanath Basu, Jayanta Ghosal, Snehasis Sur, Tilottama Majumdar, Debasish Deb, Mandakranta Sen, Ullas Mallick, Krishnendu Mukhopadhyay, Raja Bhattacharya, Dipanwita Ray to name a few. This eclectic curation was done under the stewardship of former radio jockey Roy Choudhury and as advised by Himadri Kishore Dasgupta.
