A Social Media message warning drivers in Kolkata claiming roadside criminals are throwing eggs at the windshields of passing cars so that the drivers are forced to pull over due to unclear vision and get down to clean up, thus becoming vulnerable to robbery. The message purportedly from the Police, has been doing rounds on social media platforms mainly on WhatsApp and Facebook claiming the mess blocks the vision of the vehicle by up to 92.5% instilling a kind of fear among the motorist in the city.
We spoke to Kolkata Police and found that there is no such notification issued by Kolkata Police. Speaking to News Sense, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Kolkata Police, Murlidhar Sharma, IPS said, “The message is completely fake, people should not forward such fake stuff. This may invite legal action“.
Moreover there’s no any evidence to support that claim. Several online experiments found that wipers cleaned egg residue effectively. This post has been circulating for a few years now and has been already been categorized as fake and a hoax.
According to Snopes, the earliest known warning of the egging attack, including the absurd 92.5% figure, was first appeared through an email in October 2009. From then on, various versions of the post with the same 92.5% figure were tuned to local audiences and passed on. So based on all our investigation, we can say, that the message is completely a hoax and has been already categorized as Fake.
NB: Don’t share or forward any misleading information on your social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp, by doing so you are also becoming someone, who is creating panic and confusion among the larger mass and this is a punishable offense.
