Mayor Drives Kolkata’s First CNG Operated Bus

To combat increasing fuel prices, Kolkata transport is going environment friendly. After electric buses receiving international recognition from IEA Paris and C40; CNG buses are soon to rule Kolkata.

On 9th August 2021, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, who is also the Transport Minister  himself drove the first CNG bus of Kolkata. The bus is being run by WBTC. Firhad Hakim also said, “Kolkata will now have CNG. In future, buses will be mostly electric and CNG. This will bring down cost of running buses and also reduce pollution.

In June 2021, Transport Minister, Firhad Hakim had first declared CNG buses will be started in Kolkata. Accordingly a MoU was signed between WBTC and BCGL to set up first public CNG station at Kasba area in Kolkata. It was signed between Rajanvir Singh Kapur MD WBTC and Satyabrata Bairagi CEO Bengal Gas in presence of Transport Secretary Rajesh Sinha.
