- Border Security Force was raised on 01st Dec 1965 as sentinels of eastern and western border of India. After successful completion of 55 years of arduous journey, BSF is celebrating its 56th Raising Day all over its establishments and field formations.
- The BSF was raised in accordance with an Act of the Indian Parliament on 1 December, 1965 after the India-Pakistan War of 1965 with the specific purpose of manning the Indian borders as the first line of defence against infiltration, smuggling and military assault. Before the BSF was formed the police forces of the Indian states which were located on the Indian borders were entrusted with the task of border guarding.
- Initially It was raised with a strength of 25 Battalion after amalgamation of various state armed police forces now with the passage of time its strength has gone upto 186 batalion with nearly 2.5 lakh manpower with own Artillery Wing, Water Wing and Air Wing under MHA. It is guarding Indian border with Pakistan on the western border and on eastern border with Bangladesh. The BSF has come a long way in the service to the Indian nation since 1965. As a central armed force the BSF has not only secured the borders of India since its inception but has assisted civil governance on various occasions. Its role during 1971 war, curbing militancy in Punjab in eighties, against militancy in J&K and Naxal in Chhattisgarh & Odisha has been a hall mark of its way of functioning and achievements.
- On creation of BSF in 1965, Calcutta was chosen as HQrs of Eastern Frontier of BSF to administer and command the Forces deployed all along Eastern Frontier. Sh. P K Basu, IPS was chosen to lead this newly created Ftr. Subsequently, AMMN Frontier was carved out from Eastern Frontier on 03rd June 1971. The HQ of Eastern Frontier at Kolkata became the HQ of West Bengal Frontier. The West Bengal Frontier was further divided into South Bengal with its HQ at 2B Lord Sinha Road, Kolkata – 71 and North Bengal Frontier with its HQ at Kadamtala on 23rd April 1988. The bifurcation was aimed at better management as well as augmenting our existing security arrangements of the IB. On 7 July 2019, the headquarters of South Frontier was shifted from Lord Sinha Road, Kolkata – 71 to itspresent new location Rajarhat, New Town, Kolkata.
- BSF is celebrating its Raising Day all over its establishments and field formations. HQrs Special DG Eastern Command and Frontier HQ BSF South Bengal also celebrated BSF Raising Day at Tagorevilla Campus, Kolkata. On the ocassion of BSF raising day Shri Pankaj Kumar Singh, IPS, ADG, Eastern Command, Shri Ashwani Kumar Singh, IG, South Bengal Frontier, Shri JS Oberoi, VSM, DIG/PSO extended their greetings and congratulated all ranks of BSF Eastern Command.
OPERATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS
- During the year 2019-20, South Bengal Frontier achieved milestone wherein due to concerted efforts by BSF troops cattle smuggling was reduced to almost negligible as well as other trans border crime were also checked to large extent.
- Various Activities & Ek Bharat Shershtha Bharat Programme : Various programme were under taken by units under command which includes Self–Defence Programme for girls by 27 BN BSF at Sahebkhali, self defense classes for girls and school children) at Digberia by HQ 179 BN BSF. On 12 Feb 2020, a weapon display programme was organized at 27 Bn BSF Tagore villa Kolkata for School students under the ‘Ek Bharat Sherstha Bharat’ to inculcate sense of pride for country among students.
- MEDICAL CAMP AND BLOOD DONATION CAMP ORGANISED IN DIFFTRENT LOCATIONS OF SOUTH BENGAL FRONTIER: During the period 28 medical camp and 02 blood donation were organised by Units of South Bengal Frontier for the benefit of border population.
- Assistance to local population during lock down period: When the whole of India was closed during the global corona epidemic, BSF Troops in the responsibility area of of South Bengal Frontier made efforts to met the daily needs of the people who were stucked in Lockdown wherein they provided items of daily need like food water and essential items masks, sanitary items and medicines. Besides, efforts were made by BSF make the border population aware regarding fight against COVID-19 by conducting awareness campaign.
- Assistance during Amphan Cyclone:- On 20-05-2020 the BSF troops of BOP Hakimpur, 112 Battalion, Sector Kolkata, evacuated 12 stranded people from their homes during patrolling duty, shifting them to safe place Hakimpur High School saving the lives of those villagers.
- Plantation programme for green and clean world: The Border Security Force has always been at the forefront of protecting and preserving the environment. All sector headquarters and battalions under the South Bengal Frontier have played a leading role in this action. A plantation program was organized in the border area to commemorate World Environment Day on 05 June 2020 and 12 July 2020 by BSF South Bengal Frontier personnel. During these events different types of plants were planted in their headquarters of all sectors and in the border area of the battalions. In this programme, the Bengal Frontier, BSF planted 5395 saplings on the border in one day. Along with protecting the Indian borders, the Border Security Force has also been fulfilling its responsibility of making the environment cleaner.
- Swachhata Pakhwada : BSF South Bengal Frontier organized Swachhata Pakhwada from 01 Dec 2019 to 15 Dec 2019. The BSF formations carried out community adoption (villages nearby BSF campuses &border villages), sensitizing local population for better hygiene and sanitation, undertaking cleanliness drive, Shramdan at important public places like hospital, market, bus stop, railway station etc.
- Border Security Force the “FIRST LINE OF DEFENCE” of eastern and western border of India is committed round the clock in safeguarding the borders with its motto “JEEVAN PARYANT KARTVYA”.
