A misleading post has been doing round on Social media platforms mainly Facebook and WhatsApp, claiming that this year because of the Pandemic and strict lockdown rules, there will be no Durga Puja celebration in West Bengal and there will be night curfew during the Puja.
The misleading post read, “this year one cannot do pandel hopping during Durga Puja, because Govt of West Bengal has taken a decision of imposing night curfew from evening 5pm to next day 4am. Not more than 5% visitors are allowed inside the puja pandel. On the Asthami day, flowers cannot be offered during anjali. Mask is a must, anyone having symptoms will have to undergo Corona test“.
Following complaints, Chief minister of West Bengal, Smt Mamata Banerjee on 8th September 2020, directed the police to find out who were spreading fake news saying related to Durga Puja. The CM said, “Fake WhatsApp messages are doing the rounds since morning, spread by an IT cell of a party, saying people will not be allowed to step out during the Puja. The pandemic is on and all celebrations have been cancelled or observed in a restricted manner. But there has been no meeting regarding Durga Puja so far so how can people say things like this?”
Working on the instruction of Chief Minister, West Bengal Police has arrested the person who has created and posted the fake post. This has been declared by West Bengal Police on their official twitter handle.
In last five months, West Bengal Police has arrested 259 people for creating, posting, forwarding and sharing misleading information in West Bengal.
