A video with a claim that a burglary has occurred at a Jewellery shop in Bowbazar, Kolkata. The message has been doing rounds on Social Media particularly on WhatsApp creating confusion and panic among the people.
The WhatsApp video claims that there has been a theft at a Jewellery shop in Kolkata’s Jewellery Market Bowbazar, the video further claims that the thief or thieves entered the shop cutting the wall fence and took everything after cutting the iron lockers with gas cutters.
The video reached us from various sources and we at News Sense started the investigation. We found the video on several YouTube channels with the claim that such a theft has occurred in Mumbai in a Jewellery shop named Chirag Jewelers and not in Kolkata.
We further tried to find out whether such a Jewellery shop exists in Bowbazar, on inquiry, we found that no theft has occurred in Bowbazar and there is no such jewellery shop named ‘Chirag Jewellers’ in Bowbazar.
As the matter is related to the law and order of the city, so we contacted Shri. Murlidhar Sharma, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police, Kolkata Police, speaking to News Sense he said, “No such burglary has occurred in the city and people should stop spreading such Fake messages, we are closely monitoring as such action will lend them in trouble.“
Thus, after investigating from all angles and official confirmation, we can say that the information is not real.
Claim: Theft at a Jewellery Shop in Bowbazar, Kolkata.
Conclusion: No theft or burglary in Bowbazar in recent weeks and no such shop exists in that area.
