All women film production house presents ‘Meal’ & ‘Laali’

Meal and Laali, two latest offbeat films were released before the Kolkata audience by Owlz Neck Studio, helmed by Sireesha Kadiyala, Madhu Singhee and Sushila Jain is perhaps the only all women-owned film production house in the city. Meal and Laali are directed by Abhiroop Basu. Aakash Ghoshal is one of the producers of Laali.

Meal is an internationally acclaimed 11-minute dialogue-less film, portraying a dysfunctional family which sits together for their customary morning meal amidst communal tension outside. Starring Adil Hussain, Ratnabali  Bhattacharjee, Arun Mukhopadhyay, Avishek Jain.

The film was produced in the last half of 2018 and since then it has been traveling to international festivals earning rave reviews, which includes a few prestigious selections like Arizona International Short Film Festival followed by official selections at the 19th New York Indian Film Festival, International Film Festival of South Asia, Toronto, Ottawa International Film Awards, Filmstrip International Film Festival Romania, where it was the only Indian Entry among 65 selected shorts world-wide. 

Director, Abhiroop Basu says “This is the first time the film will be shown in an Indian venue before the film premieres at New York and Toronto next month followed by Ottawa the month after.” Abhiroop has written and directed around 15 shorts and worked as an Editor and Sound Designer in many as 55 film sets based in Europe and India.

‘Laali’ is a 40 min medium-length film depicting a lonely man falling apart in his mundane routine, till one day a woman comes and changes his life forever, only in this story the lonely man is an istri (iron-man) and the woman is not actually a human being but a flowing red dress of the finest velvet. A man. A Dress. An ensuing relationship. Starring Pankaj Tripathi, Ekavalli Khanna. It was made in the first half of 2019 and has just finished post-productions

Madhu Singhee, speaking on behalf of the producers, mentioned, “It has received a World Premiere offer from Ottawa International Indian Film Awards where the Director and the Actor have been invited. Laali also happens to be Pankaj Tripathi’s first proper Hindi short film.”

The Event highlight was, Pankaj Tripathi and Adil Hussain, who came live via skype for audience interaction after the movie screening. The audience comprising of young urban film buffs and industry professionals post-production were thrilled to interact with the actors, and had many questions to ask on the film, and the actors equally replied with great zeal.

Five Mad Men ( Saurav Sinha Owned ), the very popular lounge at Sector V, hosted the screening along with the interactions. The production house also had a word of special thanks for Rana Basu Thakur , for the support he extended.
