Golfer Anant Bajoria and Devvrat Poddar has successfully qualified the final spot in the Kolkata Leg of the MercedesTrophy 2019. Anant carded a Net. Score of 70.6 while Devvrat carded a Net. Score of 72.8 respectively on Day 2 of the Kolkata qualifications. Anant and Devvrat will now be competing at the National Finals of the tournament to be played at the Oxford Golf Resort in Pune between 27th– 29thMarch 2019.
More than 200 golfers participated on the two days of the Kolkata qualifications. So far 20 qualifiers have been identified from the five legs of the tournament from Pune, Bangalore, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kolkata. Mercedes Trophy will now proceed to its next qualification destination of Hyderabad scheduled to tee off on 13th February at the Hyderabad Golf Club.
Prominent winners included Rahul Pasari who won the Ballantine’s Long Drive Challenge with an impressive drive of 281 yards. Sanjeev Jalan was declared the winner in the Standard Chartered Closest to Pin contest. In the Mercedes – Benz Closest to Pin in Two Shots, Manish Agarwal landed the ball at 4ft 4 inches from the pin to win the contest. Hemant Goenka who landed the ball at 5 inches from the pin won the Mercedes-Benz Straightest Drive contest.
The format of play was Double Peoria. This unique format of adjusting handicaps of players levels the playing field enabling golfers to have a greater chance of qualifying for the National Finals. Mercedes-Benz’s global charity partner– Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is also associated with the tournament to raise funds for its programmes in India. While participants can donate online or on-ground at the tournament venue, Mercedes-Benz India will donate an equal amount to match the funds raised from participants.
Globally, MercedesTrophy witnesses participation of approximately 60,000 golfers from across 60 countries battling it out for the top prize, making it one of the world’s largest and most coveted sporting events. The 19th edition of the MercedesTrophy will travel to seven more cities after Kolkata including Hyderabad, Delhi – NCR (Gurugram & Greater Noida), Chandigarh, Jaipur and Lucknow before returning to Pune for the National Final.
Three winners of the National Finals will then compete against those from tournaments played in 60 countries all over the world in the 30th edition of the MercedesTrophy World Final to be held in Stuttgart, Germany. Mercedes-Benz is also providing an opportunity for beginners to learn golf through their Golf Clinic program.
