Army Jawan to play Wimbledon Men’s Double

Naib Subedar Shriram Balaji, has won the Challengers ATP Tour and has qualified to play for the Wimbledon Men’s Doubles. It is for the first time that jawans of Indian Army will represent the country in Wimbledon.
Naib Subedar Sriram Balaji  and Vishnu Vardhan of Indian Army, won the Doubles at CHALLENGER ATP MEN, Samarkand, Uzbekistan defeating Mikhail Elgin (Rus) & Denis Istomin (Kaz). The duo now qualifies to play Wimbledon Men’s Doubles, starting 25 June.
Sriram Balaji happens to be the first representative of Indian Army to reach at this level. This has been possible with complete support of Indian Army Sports Control Board and MEG & Centre.
Current World Ranking of Vishnu Vardhan is 111 and that of Naib Subedar Sriram Balaji is 117. Naib Subedar Sriram Balaji and Vishnu Vardhan are the only Indian pair to take part in this Wimbledon. The three other Indian players who will be playing are Rohan Bopanna, Leander Paes and Divij Saran who are most likely to pair up with foreign players.

  1. It seems that Indian army has taken the mantle to breed sportsperson in our country. Shooters, golfers, footballers and now tennis players are being churned out by the Indian Army. However, isn’t it alarming that the state-run and private coaching clinics are unable to deliver the goods??
