A passionate designer who plays creative with colors is a known name in the country’s designing circuit. But there is some thing different in the designer Joydeep Roy, what makes him different from other designers of fame is his social outlook towards life and creative bent of mind, when it comes to his work.
Joydeep, who came to be known in the designing canvas only after his appearance on the designing scene in the year 2013 and since then hasn’t really looked back.In the year 2013, he listened to his heart and left a high paying job and fully plunged into the field chasing his dreams – a different and a colourful one. He started Coloroso, a niche handloom saree store which immediately brings to mind a burst of colours, a meaning and an exclusivity all its own.
Speaking to News Sense, about his inner call, Joydeep says, “Well… Prior to this Avatar, as you call it, I was a Salesman. Well, I still am to an extent, but then I was selling Dantmanjan! (I roll my eyes). It’s true, after graduating from Management School; I joined a FMCG Multinational Organisation and then later on went on to sell diesel, fuel, BFSI, Telecoms…. You name it. But while working with big brands, I realised that servility isn’t exactly my cup of tea, and Voila!”.
Further more he adds, nothing can satisfy his inner creative hunger “as I wanted to be a creator, wanted to create things, visions. I wanted to create a brand that would have a recall value and a brand that I can be proud about. Products, which can be sold off the shelf and products, which would have the mystical alluring charm and grace of the six yards. I just coined the term Coloroso… because I wanted my brand to have everything to do with colours, colours and more colours. Thus Coloroso”.
Joydeep, whose design inspiration is Internationally acclaimed Designer Sabyasachi, now wants Ms Vidya Balan dropping in at his store to pick up her sarees of choice.
The aesthetics at Coloroso is unique as it designs Sarees maintaining the ethnicity and Indian traditional designs and colors and has explored the saree world including Benarasis, Chanderis, Linens and has from time to time tried to bring out a fusion of modern designs with the traditional Indian crafts, completely hand-made, which makes them of limited editions and exclusive, in every respect. As Joydeep says about the USP of his products are “I would say, it’s our 4-pronged USP – Good Quality Fabrics, Unique Designs, Colours and last but no way the least, our Customer Services”.
In the social front, recently Coloroso in association with New Lights, a Kolkata based NGO has taken an initiative to rehabilitate five women from the Red Lights Area of Kalighat. Where 5 women were selected as models for Coloroso, featuring them in Benarasi Sarees, specially designed for them by Joydeep. A part of the proceeds from the sale of those sarees will go to these girls, whom New Lights will help charter a different life path liberating them from their traditional trade. The project was named Lavanyashakti and it became very popular.
A voracious reader and music lover Joydeep Roy is a family man, he considers his pillar of support his wife Aparna and his eighteen year son Aneek is his best buddy. Down the line Joydeep, wants Coloroso to be present in all the major cities in India by the end of 2018.
